L. Whitney Thwaites
Attorney at Law
Whitney is a third-generation attorney, licensed to practice law in the State of South Carolina for over ten years. Growing up with a father who practiced law in Georgia and South Carolina, and a grandfather who served as the Regional Chief Judge for Social Security Disability for the Southeast before retiring after a forty-year career with the Federal Government, Whitney knew from a very young age she wanted to be a lawyer. Her father and grandfather were her heroes, and their stories and memories have been significant in the way Whitney has developed her own career path. Whitney has devoted her legal career for the last eight years primarily to domestic work. While she has substantial experience in other fields, she has narrowed her practice areas to focus on family law and probate matters.
Whitney graduated Magna Cum Laude from the College of Charleston with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science in 2005. Whitney graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 2009, after proudly serving as a Members Editor and then an Articles Editor for The Southeastern Environmental Law Journal. Following law school, Whitney clerked for The Honorable Shirley B. Robinson, practiced personal injury law, then truly found her niche in family law. For almost six years, Whitney worked with Jack Howard of Greenville, South Carolina, soaking up his forty years of family court knowledge, before accepting a position to open up an office in Charleston, South Carolina, for a large, international family law firm. Throughout her eight years of practice, Whitney has enjoyed representing a multitude of clients from all walks of life in various family law matters, including contested and uncontested divorces, child custody disputes and modifications, contempt actions, jurisdictional issues, and complex military law issues.
Whitney is a natural problem solver, living by the philosophy that every problem encountered during her representation has a solution. Understanding this is the most difficult, painful, traumatic time of her clients’ lives, Whitney assists each client in a compassionate, yet logical, manner by filtering out emotion and providing strategies for clients to make sound decisions. Whitney has found that decisions based on logic, rather than emotion or reaction, increase successful results for clients exponentially.
