Susan Yanagi

Attorney at Law

Biography

Susan Yanagi is a dedicated family law attorney whose practice is guided by compassion, empathy, and a commitment to zealous advocacy. She understands that clients seeking a family law attorney are often facing some of the most emotional and challenging circumstances of their lives, and she is committed to helping them navigate those difficult moments with confidence, dignity, and strong legal representation.

Susan earned her undergraduate degree from Canisius University in Buffalo, New York, before attending Michigan State University College of Law, where she received a Certificate in Child and Family Advocacy. Her passion for family law began early in her legal career while serving as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, where she handled domestic violence cases as well as abuse, neglect, and dependency matters. Through that work, she developed a deep understanding of the profound impact family-related legal issues have on individuals and children, inspiring her dedication to this area of practice.

After relocating to North Carolina in 2019, Susan managed a Self-Serve Center and created Mecklenburg County’s first virtual expunction clinic during the COVID-19 pandemic, increasing access to justice for residents during an unprecedented time. She later served as an advocate for survivors of domestic violence through Legal Aid, representing clients in domestic violence protective order proceedings and high-conflict child custody matters.

Susan’s passion for family law continued to grow, leading her to private practice where she represents clients in a wide range of family law matters, including divorce, child custody, child support, domestic violence, equitable distribution, and other family-related disputes. She has also handled matters involving the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction, helping families navigate complex international custody issues.

Licensed in the Middle and Eastern Districts of North Carolina, Susan brings extensive courtroom experience and a client-centered approach to every case. She is known for being kind, compassionate, and approachable while remaining a fierce advocate for her clients’ rights and interests. Susan believes that effective representation requires not only legal skill but also understanding, patience, and genuine care for the people she serves.

Her mission is simple: to provide exceptional legal representation while helping clients feel supported, informed, and empowered during life’s most difficult transitions.
