Estate Planning Webinar: Getting Your Estate and Affairs in Order

Estate Planning Webinar: Getting Your Estate and Affairs in Order

We're sharing a new webinar from Kathryn Cook DeAngelo, Senior Counsel to our Elder Law practice division.

In Estate Planning: Getting Your Estate and Affairs in Order, Kathryn walks through the fundamentals of estate planning in plain, approachable language. She notes at the start that this isn't meant to be dense or overwhelming. It's meant to give viewers a working understanding of what estate planning involves and why it matters for them.

What Kathryn Covers

Kathryn opens with two basic questions: what estate planning is, and who should have a plan. From there, she covers:

  • Common goals behind a thoughtful estate plan
  • Special circumstances that call for extra planning, including family members with mental or physical disabilities, minor children or grandchildren, addiction, an inability to manage financial affairs, or current or future eligibility for government benefits
  • The core reasons people put a plan in place: owning, managing, or controlling assets of any kind, choosing who receives those assets, naming someone trustworthy to handle financial and personal affairs, protecting a loved one with special circumstances, and minimizing taxes so more is passed on
  • A myth that keeps too many people from planning at all: the idea that estate planning is only for the wealthy

This is the first in a series. Future installments will cover the documents that make up a basic estate plan, along with estate administration and probate.
